Shattered Trust by Deborah McClatchey5/23/2023 ![]() ![]() I've never had many problems with third person point of view, however Deborah McClatchey didn't do a good job at it at all. As well as the third person style it was done in it lacked the depth and emotion a book should have, like if it were done in first person. How am I supposed to connect with that? The over-top telling was so annoying. I was just told what had happened on their date. This paragraph is just an example from Shanna and Alex's "date." As a reader, I didn't even get to experience the fucking date with them. ![]() She was actually hungry, even after consuming the fast-food burger they'd grabbed before the movie." They ordered a couple of plates of appetizers to eat during the entertainment. "After the movie, he took her to a comedy club, catching the late show. ![]() Shanna was already thinking of marrying Alex only about 6-7% into the book, when they had close to no interaction with each other. It was fast paced and held no descriptive or emotive detailing. There was so much "telling" and no "showing" in this book. And just to clarify, I added the 1 star to my rating, but in truth I rate it a big fat 0. This book is not even worth 1 star let alone 5. I don't know what all those other people were reading, but clearly not the same crap I was. I'm so pissed I wasted my money on this shit. ![]() I am so angry! I paid almost $4 for this because just about every review I read was positive and gushing. ![]()

After the fire by will hill5/22/2023 ![]() ![]() Also, it meant I could enjoy the read for that little bit longer. By not spending through the book, I could savour the story and it made a whole lot of sense to do so. It slowed down when times got intense and serious, but also kept it going so not to clump the book up too much. There was such a good pace to this novel. ![]() The theme, the way it was written and the character of Moonbeam all gripped me from the start and guided me through a wonderfully well thought out book. I think I started to love this book from the very beginning. She’s starting to see the lies behind Father John’s words. He knows what is right, and what is wrong. Especially about never talking to Outsiders. I was immersed in the book from start to finish and found Moonbeam’s story amazing throughout.įather John controls everything inside The Fence. When the Moon Comes by Paul Harbridge5/22/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() With Tadpoles, Boston Globe-Horn Book Award winning author and illustrator Matt James draws from his own memories as a parent and as a child to tell a wistful story that will be instantly recognizable to any families sharing memories of exploring together. The boy’s father doesn’t live with him anymore, and the ponds may only be temporary, but together they make memories that just might last a lifetime. In this tender reflection on the fleeting rhythms of the natural world and the enduring love of family, a boy and his father spend a morning exploring an ephemeral pond, a delicate nursery formed by rainfall, perfect for sheltering tadpoles from predators as they grow. One rainy morning, a father and son bond over a walk through a field full of freshly formed ponds teeming with tadpoles. ![]()

Margaret atwood maddaddam trilogy order5/22/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Ren is working as a stripper/hooker at Scales and Tails while Toby is working at a spa. Oh well, I guess both Toby and Ren are kind of interesting and … what’s this? There’s some connections between them – and to Snowman aka Jimmy. But we kind of left Snowman in a situation which could turn both good and bad in the first book of the trilogy, Oryx & Crake, so why are we not reading about him? Well, yeah, I guess I know where Oryx and Crake are and why they are not exactly playing first fiddle in this book. What exactly is going on? Why am I reading about someone named Toby? And some stripper named Ren? Supposedly this is the second book in the MaddAddam trilogy, so where is Snowman, Oryx and Crake? Then they fell from a joyous life in the moment into the anxious contemplation of the vanished past and the distant future.’ (p. The influence ramsey campbell5/22/2023 ![]() ![]() He can convey more spectral terror in a single glancing phrase than most authors manage in a paragraph or a book. No writer better demonstrates how, at its best, the ghost story or supernatural horror story (either term fits his work) achieves its effects through the eloquence and skill of its prose style – and, I think, no writer in the field has shown greater willingness to convey dread. Many of his most effective moments are inseparable from his style. He was among the first to make the tale of supernatural terror as frightening as possible, an effect he achieves by an inspired and precise selection of language. ![]() Sometimes everyday objects take on or harbour hideous life, and at times the juxtaposition of these elements borders on surrealism. Far from being cosy, his stories frequently present a reassuringly ordinary setting that is invaded by the malevolent and terrible. I would say all this underrates and misrepresents the author’s contribution to the genre. ![]() I’ve seen them praised for their cosiness, their atmosphere of academia and Edwardian male camaraderie, and their reputation for providing a comfortable shiver or two. ![]() His ghost stories are a British institution. He refined the tale of supernatural terror and, given his fondness for narrative play and overt references to generic tropes, can be cited as one of the field’s first modernists. Montague Rhodes James (1862–1936) is one of the absolute masters of the British tale of terror. ![]()

Under Water by Owen Grimenstein5/22/2023 ![]() ![]() People like Owen make Nashville the envy of America."-U.S. will be a key part of Nashville's history and a guide to our future. "Reliving the Nashville flood is painful but inspiring no one tells the story better than Owen. But what would emerge triumphant from the depths of such profound darkness was a community of family, friends, and strangers far more steeped in love, hope, and kindness than they could ever possibly fathom. Destruction in communities and businesses was both total and personal, as Owen Grimenstein lost his home, most of his possessions, and very nearly, his own life. ![]() This memoir is the true, first-hand account of one man's survival during the Nashville floods of 2010, as entire neighborhoods were submerged, streets ran like rapids, and lives were lost. What was originally expected to be a typical Tennessee spring rainstorm in May of 2010 suddenly and swiftly churned into the fourth largest, non-hurricane natural disaster in American history. ![]() |
